Yugo SKS M59/66A1

by Jacob
(Utah, USA)

I was lookin through the site and noticed that no one has put up anything on an SKS, maybe I am blind but I decided to add this on to help inform people of the outstanding quality of this rifle.

The SKS rifle was made first in 1945 and only served five years until the AK-47 took its spot as the Russians main rifle. However the SKS still is used in ceremonial instances like the USA uses the M1 Garand still.

The SKS like the AK-47 is a very sturdy rifle, I chose it as my survival rifle because it has a very common round of ammuniton large enough to take most game in the 7.62x39mm (Same as AK-47), It has many safety features that are not in modern rifles like a trigger system the will not allow the rifle to shoot out of battery, a safety that physically stops the trigger being pulled so no worry of an internal safety not working, and it carries its own cleaning rod and brush inside of the rifle. (Brush in cleaning kit found in but of gun)

The rifle has its own bayonet. It also has an effective range of about 400 meters(1,312 ft, 437 yds)

The picture I included is not my rifle, but the same model. The rifle is very dependable and can be changed from semi-automatic, to a form of bolt-action by closing off the gas port. Only the Yugo M59/66A1 has that feature.

I would have only one suggestion for owners, refinish the wood stock to keep out water, or replace it with a modern synthetic stock.

Yugoslavian SKS

it is a basic no frills yugo sks. has the blade bayonette with the grenade launcher, which works well as a flash suppressor. the bayonette also acts like a bi-pod for balance and accurate shooting. it is a rifle you can depend on. the ammo for it is 7.62x39 and can be found just about anywhere in the world. it is reliable, packs a punch, good for game and stopping just about any aggressor or scaring them off. they are very easy to clean and maintain. simple design milled from hardened steel. parts are cheap and there is a multitude of aftermarket accessories for it. i would recommend a sks to anyone for survival purposes. wish i had pic of it. i will get one and leave it here.

versatility=survival

the yugo is a 5 stars assault rifle but in a wilderness survival situation small animal (ex:squirel, rabbit, and bird)are easier to hunt
and the yugo have to much power for that and is very difficult to hunt bird or duck in fly whit a rifle that's the reason I give 3 stars to the yugo for a survival rifle in the wilderness

combo rifle ex.baikal taiga:308/12, savage model 24:223/20,12/30-30 or m6 22 hornet/410
offer more possibility in the caliber choice and 12 or 20 gauge shot gun offer more versatility in ammunition for hunting situation ex.#6 to #8 for small bird and small animal,#2 to bb for duck and goose, buck shot and slug for deer, bear and personal protection and it's ease to pack a 3 pieces braking firearm , rossi firearm offer single shot combo rifle/shot gun you just change the barrel for hunting situation and they have a lot of combo choice

Good choice, but...
by: Anonymous

I have had several SKS's and an AK47, and loved them. Never had any problems with them.

The purpose for the 7.62X39 round was not to kill outright, but to wound. Kill a soldier, and you take one man off of the battlefield. Wound him and you take him and two others off of the field. (I don't know if this rule still holds, but I understand that it did when the round was created.)

Never the less, this round can kill dear, and such, as well as a bad guy.

Choice of a survival rifle will depend on what you are trying to survive. For subsistence hunting a .22 can do nicely, especially if you are a good shot. And, although a .22 is not as deadly as a high power rifle, any one with any sense will not want to be in it's way. (My first rule of a gun fight, "Don't get in one!"

If, on the other hand you fear the "Mob Rule", something more powerful would be better. (First rule of a gun fight works here too.)

Good choice, but prefer the 10/22.

The SKS is a good choice for a survival rifle. It is true. One problem, as the government consider this gun as an asault weapon. They will ban the sale of the ammo. My choice is Ruger 10/22. 22 shells are cheap and available.
