Winchester 9422 22 WMR (still available used)

Winchester 9422M

Winchester 9422M

This is my second post, the winchester 9422M, one of my favorite rifles, and of course another rimfire. I believe the 22 mag is totally underrated and this rifle in particular.

As a small game getter you can use CCI Maxi Mag 40g HP and you won't blow the little critter up too bad. Head shots are still best. OR you can use the old Winchester WRF ammo just like you'd use 38 spcl in 357 mag rifle. The old WRF has very similar performance to a 22lr. HOWEVER DO NOT USE CCI 22 WRF IN A 22 MAG. They specifically advise against it and have used a little larger bullet than the standard 22 WRF. Why they thought that was a good idea, I do not know.

The hardest part is getting the rifle sighted in for both rounds. I solved that by putting an adjustable Williams WGRS peep on the dovetailed receiver. Just can't bring myself to scope it.

For bigger varmints like raccoon and coyote CCI V-Max or a plethora of 22 mag rounds will do the trick. It is possible to take up to deer size game under the right circumstances with the 9422, although I've never done it.

What about lions and bears? I have the old Blue Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag loaded with Randy Garrett loads for that.

Me too!
by: Larry Crider

I love the .22 WMR. Mine are both a Ruger 96/22 and a Taurus revolver as well. I think they go well together and have more power than most would think.

I used to own a 9422 magnum , and id say it was the best 22 i have ever owned.
And living where i do still, the 22 Magnum is a great little deer getter, ( mainly head and neck shots at 100 yards). it is also effective on coyotes, and foxes. i have heard of one used on a young bull elk, with a behind the ear shot, theat put the bull down , don't know if i would try it.

Good Idea(Depends on part of country you are in)
by: Rufridr

This is a good choice. Depending on what part of the country you are in. A 22 magnum I use the 50 grain in the rifle and 40 grain Solid CCI in Taurus Revolver. It will kill a deer if you are close and hit him in the neck or under the ear. I carried one as a working rifle on a ranch for years and when it started to go down(it was not worth re barreling I bought a Henry and put a 4x Leopold scope on it. You cab carry plenty ammo with out a lot of weight and it will do for a personal defense round as well. With a scope outto 200 yards it could be deadly enough. You can harvest small game with it using solids and not destroy the meat. This is from personal experience, The Taurus revolver I have holds 8 rounds and at 35 yards will hit a gold ball or charcoal bricket very shot more than enough to harvest small game.
