Tula arsenal (soviet weapons factory) Mosin Nagant model 1891/30

by glenn
(minneapolis, minnesota)

Bought the rifle in April 2010 from J&G Sales online. My eldest son and I have shot it at a local indoor gun range three seperate times, and put 80 rounds of 203 grain soft point commercial ammo thru it. The gun is balanced nicely, and comfortable to shoot. We've only shot standing offhand at 25 yards, but the rifle seems accurate enough. The rifle is simple to operate and maintain, but the sight picture could be better. This rifle also appears rugged and durable. This rifle is everything I admire and want in a firearm, simple, durable, and powerful!
Can't beat the price for what you get. $89.00 dollars for the rifle, and I can buy quality commercial ammo online for $8.95 for a box of 20 rounds. The 7.62x54R cartridge is powerful, and would seem adequate for most any game animal, except perhaps for rhinoceros or cape buffalo!
I bought the rifle mainly for home defense, plus I also enjoy target shooting, and we plan to try it out for deer hunting this fall.
I really appreciate a military surplus rifle for the price, proven reliability, and to own a piece of history!

Mosin Nagant
by: John Smith, Fort Benning GA

i bought about 20 or so mosins when they were 39.99 each, one of which i took the barrel off( this is a pain in the @$$ i had to cut a relief cut to take it off) and bought a Lother Walther Barrel blank, that gun after much tweaking is shooting man sized at 1,000 yards with Surplus Russian ammo, i have a good 50,000-75,000 rounds of 7.62x54R most of which are Silver tips. with how cheap they are and how cheap the ammo has been, i feel i wouldn't miss a few, but the all time best battle rifle in history as far as i can se is the German made HK-91(hk-g3 in select fire) i shoot 3 gun almost every weekend i am a former US ARMY Ranger who served 13 years in the 75th, and after that i went into SF. the HK-91 is better then the m1a because of one part of the M1a the op-rod system, but as always Training Trumps Gear!

Best Buy in Surplus Firearms

I agree with all that you say except I love the sight picture! I much prefer the Mosin Nagant sight picture to the Mauser inverted V's.

I have been telling anyone who will listen that if you want a rifle that will hunt anything and last multiple lifetimes (yours, then your kids and their kids), get a $90 Mosin Nagant. I have two 91/30's, a M38 and an M44. The M38's are my favorite due to their perfect size. I love my M44 too! They shoot cast bullets great (160 grain gas check, 16 g 2400 ~ 1500 fps). I put a scout mount on my M38 and it will shoot sub MOA with handloaded 174 grain FMJBT Hornady .312 bullets (46 gr. Varget). These weapons are much more accurate than their appearance would have you believe.

Great rifles all. Greatest bargain out there in the "survival" rifle catagory for at least the last ten years.

Glad to hear you are enjoying yours. You got to get the rifle outside though...you can easily ring the gongs as 100 and 200 yards all day long from the offhand position. It's too easy from the bench.

Take care
