Swiss Schmidt Rubin K31

by JT
(Sierra Mountains, CA, USA)

I have 6 K31s....so far I have one 1911 carbine usually called the K11 and a 1911 long rifle. These are the most accurate surplus rifle one can buy. The ammo is 7.5 x 55 Swiss and the surplus ammo, the GP11, is match grade. .308 diameter, 174 grn bullet, approx 2600 fps. 1" MOA groups are common with a stock rifle from a rest.

You can buy a "clamp on" scope mount, side mounted, no drilling required, using only one Allen screw. The mount is interchangeable onto any K31. You can still use the issued iron sights with the scope mounted.

The Swiss never used corrosive ammo and never went to war. The fact that no corrosive ammo was ever used means that you'll get a clean, shiny bore on a surplus rifle.
The sport of shooting was BIG in Switzerland and it still is so they demanded a "Rolex-quality" rifle. K31s are available from around $225 - $325 for a typical rifle. The bores and actions are usually excellent and the stocks are dinged up. GP11 is still available and a case of 480 runs about $280 delivered. You can buy boxer primed, soft pointed hunting ammo. Reloading boxer or berdan is always an option and currently Berdan primers are available for about $180 per 5000. You will need a Berdan decapper. You can always stock up on regular boxer brass and components.
The action is a straight pull bolt action. The mag holds 6. You can get off 6 shots in about 9 seconds because of the style of bolt action...very fast. In my opinion, this is the best surplus rifle (bolt action) available.
How good is it? The winner at Camp Perry this year in vintage class used a stock 1938 vintage K31 shooting the GP11 ammo! Stick on a scope and you have a great rifle for long range. How far? I use it in matches out to 1000 yards.
The Germans never did invade Switzerland as they knew that the combo of superb rifleman with this rifle (well hidden in the high ground) spelled disaster for their Army! Buy one. Buy ammo. Buy a scope. Practice.
Oh yes. The triggers are superb, two stage, breaking with no creep at 3.5#..............sweet!

Ya but...
by: Jack

I love K31's, and I own two...well one now, I gave the other to my brother. I agree that the K31 is fast, very well machined, has good iron sights, is ergonomic and is exceptionally accurate. I love the 7.5 Swiss round too, but the K31 ranks pretty low on my "go to survival-gun" list. It comes down to me not trusting the action to function well in less than optimal environments. I am not sure that the straight pull would be strong enough to extract or chamber rounds with bit of grit in the action or on the ammo? I would also be worried that if I had to remove the bolt for any reason, the bolt handle would pop off and it isn't the easiest bolt to re-assemble. I also consider that 7.5 Swiss ammo is widely available online, but not so much in local shops. Lastly, it is a big, heavy rifle, especially with the scope mounted on it. For those reasons, I consider my K31 as my garrison sniper rifle.

I have a BSA 10X Panther scope in a clamp-on St Marie mount, which is a genius peice of machining and one I highly recommend. What a great mount, even with the offset (to the right of the boreline), which allows for the use of the iron sights with the scope attached. My K31 will easily shoot MOA with handloads (168 grain Hornady BTHP's and 4064)...I don't shoot the GP11 (but I have a bunch!) because the rounds are magnetic and I only, so far, have shot my K31 at the range. I love this rifle but not for the field.

Were I a hillbilly running around the mountains or living in a remote cabin, I would go with a Mosin Nagant (any of them), Enfield or even a Yugo M24/47 before a K31 (from inexpensive C&R choices of weapons), even though the K31 is more accurate and faster (on a perfect day) than those listed.

Beautiful K31 BTW. I love mine, it just is down my list for a go to gun.

K31 stocks
by: Pete

I have on occasion run across composit and Nylon stock offerings for the K31. I haven't paid much attention to them as I don't own a K31 myself. However, I have seen several in this aftermarket configuration both at the range and as an Alaska aircraft survival kit rifle.
I would think with a little time on Google one could find a good stock for this fine Swiss weapon.

Nice K31
by: Dave

Wow JT, that is a beautiful K31... Definitely the nicest one I've ever seen. I'd like to acquire one, but every time I find a Schmidt Rubin rifle, they look like hell ! They have great barrels, and the actions/receivers look good, but my god, the stocks ALWAYS look like they've been dragged behind a truck for 50 miles. Why is that ? I'm going to guess you did a lot of work getting your rifle looking that good.
My brother picked one up at a gun show a few years back after reading about their accuracy, and everything you say is dead on. These things are tack drivers.
Do you have any trouble keeping that scope zeroed with the mount you described ? Thanks again, sweet gun.
