Survival Fishing Kit

fishing kit frog gig frog gig holder fishing kit in vial.

I keep a very small survival fishing kit with my gear. Its basically just some line, a couple of flies, a trout worm, 2 sinkers and 2 hooks. I've tested the flies and know I can catch fish with them, some line, and a stick. I've also caught catfish and other fish with just a hook and sinker and some grubs or whatever worms I can dig up out of the ground. Never used the trout worm before, but had some room so I put it in there for the hell of it.
Its not going to feed a village or anything, but its enough to give me a shot at catching a fish should the opportunity present itself in a survival situation.

The other piece of my survival fishing kit is a frog gig... or frog spear, depending on where you live I reckon. Takes just a few minutes to get it secured to the end of a stick, and you can use your flashlight at night to spot the frogs eyes and keep the light in his eyes as you approach slowly, then gig him. The barbs on the forks will keep him from wriggling off usually. I'd imagine you could use this to spear fish with if you practiced, but I've never tried, but I'm sure if I was hungry enough I'd give it a shot. You could also use as a spear tip for small game, squirrels, muskrats, etc. if you can get close enough or sit still by a trap long enough, snakes too. Very versatile, small, light, effective. (stick it in a block of styrofoam so you can pack it without punching holes in all your gear.)

Eat FISH Instead of worms....
by: Anonymous

YEa, I have made several of these for different bags and such. While shopping in some surplus stores, I stumbled onto an airmans survival fishing kit that comes stocked in the airmans?pilots survival vests. WOW! What a kit! Best packed fishing kit Ive ever seen. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into the packing and contents of the kit. They are sort of hard to find, but there always a few floating around on Ebay. Well worth the money or look at someone elses and copy it.

Just a thought though.......

If you also whacked in a few tiny hooks they are useful for not only catching fish (remember you can catch a big fish on a little hook, but you cant catch a little fish on a big hook), but also tiny hooks can be used with attached line inside a bit of bread or other bait to catch feeding birds or even jagging squirrels, turtles, crayfish or frogs ect.
Another thought, if you manage to find a roosting branch were a group of birds will huddle together and sleep each night you can wrap multiple hooks around the top of the branch with you clear line to jag a few of the birds. Looping your clear fishing line would work well also to snare a bird.
Those couple of flies are a great idea and if you added a cork (use it also as a lid), you could make a "bob pole" and suspend the bait under the cork for fighting bigger fish.
