The best GPS is a map and compass. While GPSs are great tools, they have way too many issues to bet my life on. Currently, we have solar flares and their activities that interfere with GPS reliability. Also, the pole shift is ongoing and it is effecting GPS and compasses. The simple answer is that gadgets are cool but they shouldn't replace skill and knowledge. I have a nice GPS, use it hunting and geocaching. Great piece of gear, the problem is that it uses batteries, it relies on a signal from space and under canopy or heavy foliage it will not pick up. The compass, the stars and a good map or even a basic road map will give you reliable navigation without batteries, under canopy in any weather and gadgets are no replacement for skill and knowledge.

Batteries not included

You are so right, batteries are not needed! I also am a believer in topographic maps as they can aid in pinpointing your location. As far as I know, EMP (electromagnetic pulse) will not destroy a good old compass. Basics are good.
