stoeger 2000

A shotgun hands down. It is the most versitile. No offence .22 fans, but theres a reason cops don't carry .22s. Buck shot and slugs have a proven track record as good defensive rounds. As for food gathering, a shotgun can harvest large and small game as well as birds on the wing. No other firearm can do that. Try shooting a signal flare through your pistol or rifle. On the down side, a shotgun is a large weapon, and the ammunition is heavy.

Hmmm....

I shot a grouse with a 12Ga once when I was 12. Not much meat left to harvest after the cloud of feathers settled. For larger game (w/ slugs) or for birds a little further away, its ok. And of course for the 2 legged predators its top notch.

My concern is less for fielding a resistance force and more for providing for my family, my Marlin 60 will pick out bunnies and birds every day of the year and the shots dont scare away the game into the next county. That said, more people every year are killed by a .22LR than by any other caliber. There are several reasons for this though, and they are a bit OT.

If you are sold on shotguns, I'd recommend a pump action rather than the auto pictured. Autoloaders are notoriusly finicky when it comes to ammo. Especially since you mentioned flares, specialty rounds, etc. Since you are a fan of what the cops use, Mossberg 500, Remington 870, Winchester 1300 are all very common.
