SKS ammo

SKS ammo

It's acurate, robust, reliable, fires a necked down 308 bullet, and still available for about 250.00 or less.
I have used one for 20 years, and have used it for taking game (deer and hogs). In my opinion it is a very adequate survival rifle. stock up on ammo is easy through internet.

SKS rifle, Norinco, whomever
by: John McHugh - Indiana

Good, solid, dependable, reliable, very easy to modify to suit operator. Ammunition (7.62x39) has good stopping power, easy to acquire, and reasonable price. Easy to maintain and holds up well to abuse. Simple controls, most people can be proficient in a short time.

SKS - Pint sized hard hitter
by: Anthony Twidale

".311 not .308".
"Definately not a shortened .308".............
It doesn't much matter, this weapon is tough, utterly reliable, simple (gruntproof?) and i doubt whether anyone could tell the difference between getting shot in the guts with a 7.62x39 or a 7.62 NATO round at 400 yards. Both will achieve the same results.
Maybe one thing to ponder though, would it make sence in an "invasion situation" to start out with a rifle that (could) be compatable with whatever weapons that invading force might be using?
What i mean is, going back to the cold war times probably the weapon of choice for an invading country would be the 7.62x39 (AK/SKS/RPD)? Surely being able to pick up an enemies ammo and utilize it straight away has to be the biggest plus.
Hence the SKS or AK-47,
.223 would be another choice. Surely this logic would ensure a limitless supply?
Unless you had an army of nazis or ANZACs comming toward you, then i'd opt for an 8mm or a .303.
Just a thought. :-)

Well,,,
by: Strider

"shortened is a better description. As power goes, the 7.62x39 (yup .311), is about 2/3 the power of a .308 Winchester. Plenty adequate for deer sized game out to 175 yards, with soft point ammo. It equates pretty well with the .30-30 Winchester in power. Mine gets about 4-5 MOA accuracy so don't expect a tack driver.

Though not fancy, it is rugged, reliable and inexpensive. Get one, get several.

My choice for a survival rifle. The 7.62x39 ammo is readily available and cheap. The box magazine won't get lost and has a ten round capacity which can be loaded very quickly with stripper clips. Last but not least, if you run out of ammo, it has a bayonet!

The SKS bullet is .311, not .308. It is in no way a "necked down" .308.
