Knowledge. You should be able to survive with natures gifts at least that's what are ancestors did. Otherwise carry a good knife and know whats in the wilderness that can help you but you can get everything with a knife make shelter,collect fire building tools, collect water, make a container for water, make traps for food, prepare food, and other stuff but just keep studying and learning.

that's great but...

I would carry a bit more than just a knife as a survival tool. It is definitley one or the most important item to have in your bag, but I would add a bit more...such as water filters / tablets, a firestarting kit, a flashlight, a poncho...etc, in addition to studying and increasing field knowledge. In Los Angeles, folks offer classes now in field survival and trap making...all good but having a few more items sure makes life better and more likely to see the next year.
