Rice

Survival Foods - Rice

Both in my home survival supply, and my hiking/hunting survival pack I carry rice. In the survival pack a pound of rice can be used with just about any food that you can hunt, fish, or forage. In a pinch you can even eat just the rice. It wont last as long, but it is available. I have been told that the Veit Cong used to take a small handful of rice, eat it uncooked, and let it swell up in the stomach (make sure you drink plenty of water, or you will dehydrate).

In the home supply, the same applies. 50 pounds of rice can stretch what ever you have available or can find a very long way.

Don't use brown rice
by: Anonymous

Brown rice has oils in it that go rancid in a short time, do not use for long term storage.
Vacuum packed white rice will last a very long time use it instead.

Rice
by: Peyton Quinn - Colorado

Rice is very cheap to buy, stores indefinitely when in a sealed plastic container. YOu will need small pot with a tight fittng cover (lid) and heat source to boil the rice. Leave the cover on while to rice cooks, check it after 12 minutes to see if it is done. If not cover again check 3 mintues later. I cup of rice and two cups of water is he ratio for cooking. I cup of rice in a small pot takes about 15 minutes to cook or more depending on altitude. 1 cup will feed two or even three people for single meal each.Get 50 lb sack of rice at Big Sam's it will feed you a long time.
