remington 870 with a 20 inch smooth bore slug barrel

by Steve Mann
(Bedford Co Pa. )

I have used this shot gun many times on hikes and camping trips in Pa,State Game Lands, Canada,Newfoundland, and even in Uganda and Sudan.

I know this is not a well known combo but as I see it with the power pistons in the shot shells holding a good shot pattern and the advantage of sabot slugs for bigger stuff it makes a great tool for obtaining all kinds of game and a great defense weapon for most anything that wants to do you harm.

I have always loved a shotgun for its ability to uses all kinds of ammo out of the same familiar shooting platform.

The old adage: Shoot what you feel comfortable with and you will hit what your aiming at.

I know there are lots of high cal. weapons and even small cal. weapons but none of them can switch from bird shot to Buck shot to a massive slug.

Remington 870 exp 12ga 20" rifled bbl rile sights , bad ass
by: hotshot

I recently purchased a new in the box rem. 870 express 12ga pump 20" rifled bbl. At first I was concerned about the kind of shot or slug to use, but after shooting a few different rounds ,have decided that it will shoot what you put in it, so it depends on what it is utilized for . the rifled bbl tends to spin the shot out in a wide pattern that expands quickly. this actually is effective at close range as in a home defense situation. With 3'#4 hp it is devastating at 5 to 7 yards ,but you will feel it too. for more accurate long range out to 100 yards use the slugs. After racking a box of shells thru it it hasn't missed a beat and the bbl still looks brand new. I have a winchester m1400 to hunt with and this bad boy is going to be used as HD. Great gun

yes, 870 + 20" cylinder barrel with rifle sights
by: jackflintstone

I am with you! I can hit a 12" plate at 100 yards offhand regularly and with shot out of the cylinder bore barrel opens up fast. I haven't had the pleasure of having it out widely as you but if I was out "there", I would feel real good with this combo. The only drawback and it isn't that big a deal unless you expect combat is the ammo is so big and bulky. But I'm with you, there is no more versatile weapon than this...you can hunt anything from doves and rabbits to bears. What other weapon can you say the same for?
