Remington 870 Wingmaster Slug Gun

Remington 870 Slug

Remington 870 Slug

I have 30 years as a LE firearms instructor. My weapon of choice is the Remington 870 Wingmaster Slug Gun w/sights. For CCW I have a Olympic Arms 1911. I like not having to fire too many rounds to stop an agressor. If I were to choose a rifle to supplement these I would chooses a .22 Bolt for smaller game, and a good bolt .223 with a scope would also be a great supplement space permitting. For mid range defense a Galil or Arsenal in .223

Stay away from heavy rounds in a rifle, they are deafening and ammo is too heavy in bulk. For most game a .223 will work with proper shot placement. Also choose common ammo that is readily available. Good luck finding .218 Bee during an emergency! All National Guard units have .223, and you can carry enough .22 to last for YEARS!

Another 12 gauge believer
by: J.W. jr

I strongly agree with your choice of a 12g pump. Of all the guns I have, or have had, it is the most versatile and the one I feel most confident with. Mine is a Mossberg, mainly based on the fact that when I graduated from single shot to pump gun it was a Mossberg 500 given to me on my 11th birthday. They are ultra reliable, easy to clean, simple to use, and able to stop anything from doves on the fly to a charging brown bear. An 18-20" barrel with buckshot for devastating knockdown power up close, and rifled slugs for the same out to about 75 yards. Swap out for a 28" vent rib (30 seconds) and shoot doves, ducks, grouse, quail, nutria, etc... Do another barrel swap for a rifled one with cantilever scope mount and have a 200-230 yard accurate weapon with modern sabot slugs(I get great accuracy with Hornady sst). Back this up with a reliable handgun and you have a potent combination and are able to handle most any survival situation,

Good Choices
by: jackflintstone

Ditto on what you said. A 12 gauge is perhaps the single most useful and versatile weapon a civilian can use. Backed up with a .22 LR this is a hard combination to beat. I like your .45 choice for handgun, I would likely opt for my S&W M66 .357 magnum with 4" barrel. If I didn't have that, I would go with the 7 round Taurus Tracker in .357 and 4" barrel.

I bought a .223 H&R Survivor rifle a while back and have come to love it, it is perfect for hunting, is rugged and was cheap. A nice combo.

As for combat / defense, it is hard to argue with a .223 in an AR style platform. I would be happy with an AK in 7.62x39 too.

Thanks for your post, simple and to the point.
