Norinco SKS, or variant

The sks is one of the most under rated rifles available. Its in expensive, accurate, reliable and a comfortable size to carry. The vast production and popularity of the sks makes it very customizable. There is a ton of after market stuff for the sks. There are various types of stocks, magazines, mounts and optics, all available for low cost and they are nearly all of good quality. This is one of the best surplus firearms around, they are made by Russia, China, Yugoslavia, and have been used to great effect in many theaters of war throughout history. This weapon should not be under estimated.

Norinco SKS

I have a Norinco SKS. This has got to be one of the greatest rifles ever made. In a survival situation you really can't ask for any better. One of the perks is that it is legal in most places to hunt with and with an average price of around $250 it can't be beat as a hunting rifle, and with a 10 round mag of 7.62X39 I could shoot hogs all day long. Also a formidable self defense rifle in any event from invasion to zombies.

sks

absolutely not to be underrated. since its inception in 1945 up to today, the sks has seen every theatre of conflict. our troops still find them now in irac and afghanistan. they are that good. in my opinion, the only difference between an ak-47 and the sks, is that the ak is fully auto. never not once have i had any kind of issue with my sks. two and a half cases of ammo later and all i have had to do is clean it.

I'm a big fan of the SKS rifle; I have a Yugo M59. Everything you say is true, but for me the real benefit of the SKS is that you don't need to do a thing to it - ever - which means you can put more money into ammunition and shooting. All you got to do is buy one and you are the owner of an accurate, powerful, robust and realiable weapon that will serve you well the whole of your lifetime for every important reason there is for owning a firearm (1. defense, 2. offense - combat, 3. hunting and 4. fun). In most cases, I suspect these SKS's will last longer than most of their owners - I pray that I wear out my guns before I die, but I don't think it's possible - I also have 4 Soviet Mosin Nagants. Anyway, you don't have to do much, they aren't demanding, just give a little love every now and then and they'll do what their supposed to do every time you pull the trigger. SKS's are a fabulous bargain and great choice for survivor rifle, bug out gun or ranch rifle. 4 or 5 ten round stripper clips don't weigh much or take up much space yet allows for an adequate response to just about any threat or situation short of war or invasion by body snatchers. It's a very useful rifle. If anything ever happened to my M1 Garand, my SKS would takes it's place in my top 5 (my minimum bug out = five guns)until I could afford another Garand or move to a way freer state where I could get an AR in .308 Winchester with a 20 rd detachable magazine, which would allow me to cut the number of bug out guns to four.

The only thing I did change on my SKS was to put on an extended rubber butt pad (2 screws, no alterations,$15)because rubber has a higher coefficient of friction than steel and won't slide out when stood up on a rock, a table or a in a corner with a hard wood floor. The longer length of pull also feels better to me. I am tempted by the Mojo rear sight but after every outing, I realize there's no reason to do anything, I like the SKS sight picture and it shoots great, usually with Yugo surplus (very nice ammo, I have a high regard for Yugo rifles and munitions.)

I'll leave now before I'm pushed off my soapbox.
