Nighttime visitor

by Nick
(Star Lake, NY)

I was doing an exercise overnight stay in the woods near my home, as I live in the Adirondack mountains of NY. I made a not-so-great debris shelter, and the rain came lightly, quite fortunatey for me. As I was trying to sleep, I felt an unusual sensation on my leg. Soon I realized it was a snake trying to slither into my pocket. I pushed out the door to my shelter, grabbed the snake by the tail and flicked it out of my pocket. I quickly unsheathed my knife and sliced it's head off. I buried the body in some cold soil and marked the spot with a rock, by moonlight, to return the next morning for breakfast...
It turns out that the snake was realy to small for me to do anything with. I tried cooking it over my open fire on a rock, skin and all, but in the end it was too much work for the nearly microscopic amount of meat. Kinda felt bad for killing the little fella without using him. From now on I'll make sure to size any possible meal before my blade gets frisky with their neck.

Snakes
by: Wayne B

Nick, you probably did the right thing by killing it. It could just as easily have been poisonous. It's unfortunate that it was too small to eat, but you still came out ahead (pardon the pun). BTW, to cook a snake, remove the head, split it down the belly (if you want the hide) and remove the intestines and wrap it around a green stick to cook over the fire, or cut it into 3 to 4 inch pieces, roll in flour, salt and pepper and fry in oil, butter or whatever is handy, till it's brown. Most of the meat is around the backbone.
Bon Apetit
