I bought the Mossberg 500 persuader for home protection and if I ever need to defend my castle or family in a crisis situation. Good firepower with 8 shell capacity. Reliable. Mine is loaded with 00 buckshot.
A shotgun is pretty good in a home defense role because in the confined space of a house you get the spread pattern, you need all the help you can get when you wake up from a dead sleep, and may only have a few seconds to react. shotgun ammo generally will not penetrate through walls as much as a centerfire bullet either, so there is less chance for collateral injury or death, although 00 buck will put a large hole through most anything.
Just the sound of a shell being shucked into the chamber of a pump gun like the mossberg 500 persuader will send an intruder fleeing.
