Mosin Nagant M44

Mosin Nagant M44 - Russian Military Surplus

Mosin Nagant M44 - Russian Military Surplus

Cheap. My Mosin Nagant M44, Russian made in 1947 in the Izhevsk Arsenal. Paid less than $100.00 and added a sling, a leapers tri-rail with a mildot scope mounted forward so the bolt handle clears the optic. I can add a surefire tactical light and the barrel is short enough for CQB and the ballistics of the 7.62 x 54R round is good out past 500 yard (easily).
Surplus ammo is cheap and still available and I can use soft points for hunting. It goes in my truck or car. It is durable and easy to clean.
Cheap and simple.

Mosin nagnat 91/30
by: Anonymous

I found my model 91/30 at an old army surplus store for around 100 dollars. Thought to myself it would be a cheap hunting rifle for those long distance shots;(the ones the ol' 30/30 can't touch). So far i gotta say it seems like a really accurate rifle. I say seems because i have only used the plain iron sites which are a pain to adjust, and it shot high at 100 yrds; i hear this is common. Other than that, this gun is really simple to teardown and maintain. Also those 7.62X54R rounds really pack a punch! Bought 400FMJ silver tipped rounds of ammunition from cheaper than dirt.com for about 100 bucks, not bad for rifle ammo these days (although i had to hammer and chisel that old spam can to get to them). Recently i just put a P.U. sniper scope on it and am really looking forward to this winter ending, so i can head on down to the range and use it.
-Compared to a K98 Mauser-
Although the action is a little stiffer than the K98 Mauser and the strip clips don't feed nearly as smoothly, i think the mosin makes up for it in cost and simplicity. Also you get the same hard hitting impact from the 7.62 rounds as you do the 8mm for a lot cheaper (no brainer). As far as recoil, the 28" barrel makes this a comfortable gun to shoot as well; not to mention it gives a little bonus as far as range goes.
So, i recommend this rifle to anyone who wants to own a reliable peice of history and doesn't want to pay those high prices for K98's out of mitchell's mausers; or people who shy away from using a gun shot by the enemies of our grandfathers. Overall a great gun.

Mosin Nagant M44 or M91
by: Dwayne H. Milledgeville,GA

A good bolt action is still more capable than a semi/full auto under extreme conditions(When conditions are rough)and i don't think there's one more simple, tougher and easier to maintain than a Mosin Nagant rifle. This gun is super tough and WILL function and wont wear out. This gun has been on the battlefield for about 100 years and is still seeing action. Accuracy is outstanding(An AR-15 might be able to pick off cows at 300 yards but a with a Mosin you can pick off chickens from the next county over)it shoots a 7.62(.310 dia)x54mm rimmed cartridge which is somewhere between the .308win(7.62x51 nato)and 30-06 springfield in ballistics. Most ammo you find for this rifle is military ball(FMJ)and it normally cost about $6-$12 for a box of 20 or you can buy jacketed ammo for deer/game hunting(Legally)for around $20-$30 per box.All old military ammo for this rifle is sealed around the primers and bullets so they are waterproof and people are still digging holes in Ukraine and finding 45 year old ammo that still shoots flawlessly. You can get bayonettes and all kinds of accessories for these guns really cheap. So what does one of these rifles cost? I bought mine completely refurbished in immaculate shape for $100 and $125, yep that cheap but most of the time you can find them in gun stores for about $80 no joke. Also if your backtracking through Siberia and cant find firewood there is plenty extra on the stocks of these guns theres been a many Russian soldiers still alive today that can verify that. So that's one of my guesses...

Mosin Nagant M44
by: Louie

If you are thrifty with your ammo this bolt action rifle is the best. The 7.62x54R round is somewhere around a .308 , give or take. Its a lot shorter than the M91/30 So its a good a hunting rifle for me. Its extremely simple to use, break down and clean. Its pretty heavy so if you gotta lug this around in the wild it would get a little tiring. However, with a steel butt-plate it makes one hell of a club. The side folding bayonet comes in handy when you run out of bullets and that bear or human is coming at you. The bayonet can be removed, although I chose to keep mine on there. This old commie rifle would be my choice if I had one rifle to take with me (besides a .22).

hunting with a mosin
by: jarrod watkins

i have a m44 that i modernized for hunting i tapped it and put a tasco pro point red dot scope with 0 telescopic power on it. also put a advanced technology stock(monte carlo)$59.00=better looking and feels better when shooting. and i can hold a 6 inch grouping at 50 yards... with a 9 power scope i can bring that into 3 inch at 100 yards.and if you want to know about knockdown power WOW!they must have the casing cramed full of powder it hits a deer like a train ive shot them with 7mm mags and a 300 win mag and this is rite with the big boys of course im using a 203 grain soft point its a great gun to hunt with its almost all i use now so go and buy yourself one and have fun blasting away with the four dollar boxes of rounds you cant get cheaper ammo just another great thing to consider if you enjoy shooting alot.

Good Call JT

I have owned the M44 for a couple years, and I dont think I have ever gotten so much bang for the buck... literally. This is a fun gun to shoot. A little heavy but real compact. Mine is reasonably accuarate too, not as accurate as my 8mm Mauser from the same time period, but pretty good all the same. I have never shot a gun that produces a bigger muzzle flash than this weapon does, not that thats a good thing, but its impressive at night !
