Marlin 45/70 or shotgun with slugs

by anonymous

marlin .45/70 guide gun.

marlin .45/70 guide gun.

An AK or SKS takes a 7.62x39 round which, in my opinion, is a horrible choice for anything besides its intended purpose-a cheap military bullet. It has horrible trajectory, not much knock down power, etc. If you're carrying a gun purely for protection from bears/predators/etc. then a shotgun with slugs would also be a great choice. But for this situation I would probably go with a Marlin lever action .45/70, it has tons of knock down power, decent trajectory out to 200 yards or so, and is easy to carry. Look at what guides in Alaska are carrying-I've never seen one of them toting an AK-47 around, it just isn't a good gun for that purpose. Most professional guides are carrying shotguns with slugs, lever action .45/70's, and a variety of bolt action rifles. If the gun is meant for survival with the possibility of defending yourself from other people, the AR platform is the way to go, probably in a .223(5.56mm).

.410 in a Guide Gun
by: WillardHuffines

I've successfully fired .410 out of a Guide Gun and find reasonable pattern at 25 yards with no felt recoil. However, the successful extraction rate is maybe about half to two-thirds of rounds fired. When extraction does occur, ejection has generally been good. But either the plastic .410 body grips the chamber a too tightly when fired, or else the rim isn't quite prominent enough for sure extraction every time.

I've never tried firing a 45 LC in the .45/70 Guide Gun. Would be interested in hearing, especially on light of the current popularity of Taurus' Judge series.

7.62x39
by: Anonymous

The 7.62X39 is a good all around multi-purpose round. I have taken several deer and elk with a semi-auto AK. Overkill? Not at all. Underpowered? Nope. AK accurate? Well... with the standard 16 inch barrel, not good at 100 yards. But the SKS, mine at least, does a damned fine job at taking anything I shoot at; even at 100 yards. I swapped out the short wooden stock for an ATI Fiberforce stock and now have better control as the rifle now fits me better. IMHO, the SKS is a damn fine survival rifle. Also, with so many people owning the AK and SKS', in a SHTF scenario, there will be plenty ammo and spare parts if needed.

balistic thoughts
by: Anonymous

The 7.62 X 39 is balisticaly the same as a 30-30. When compaired to the AR's 5.56 (223) round u will find that it (7.62 X 39) has as much force FT LB at 100 yards as the AR at the AR's muzzel. The main differance being that the AK SKS is battle accurate 4" groupe at 100 yards as opposed to the accuracy of an AR. AK's & SKS' are more reliable but the AR has the edge in accuracy. The AR w/the standard sight configuration has a huge rainbow effect on the sight picture with 25 yard chest shots being made with the point of aim being on the belt line. Just some things to think about. Keep your powder dry!

by: Anonymous

Can you put .410 in the Marlin like others have done with the 45 long colt?
