Marlin 39 TDS

by Rick
(Salem, OR. USA)

Marlin Model 39

Marlin Model 39

This rifle is a variation of the Model 39 lever .22 and is no longer made. It has a 16" barrel and a slimmer fore arm and weighs 5lbs. It came with the floating case similar to the papoose Like other 39s it feed .22 LR, L, an S equally well and even "mixed".

I've not scoped it but added a Marble's peep tang and left the stock rear sight as back up. I replaced some springs, cut the hammer strut to make the rebounding hammer "non-rebounding".

With the Marble's Peep this rifle is right on at 50 yards and I can hit a 6 inch circle at 100yds. Which, given my average to midland abilities is pretty good.

TDS = Take Down System.
by: Dave

Excellent choice Rick, thanks for the post. If I'm not mistaken the Model 39 Marlin has the distinction of being the oldest lever action .22. They definitely have a reputation for being among the best. I think TDS stands for take down system ? ..and although the dont make a "TDS" model any longer, the 39A Golden ( Pictured above ) still has the same quick take down system, utilizing a knurl screw with a coin slot.
I have never been able to put down my Ruger-10/22 long enough to consider a lever action .22 of any kind, but I'm sure tempted to buy one. The only thing I'm not too crazy about on the Marlin 39 is the sticker price !! $500 bucks is a lot for a .22, but I guess you get what you pay for !

All the best
Dave
