A Beginning
Ok, Riddle this with holes.
There are two many choices. What are you preparing for? The Zombies, End of the World (2012), Fall of the Economy/Government or some type of Super Flu? This is what I know, my choice is based on the minute of angle for the rifle, adaptability and availabillity. The AR-15 is the Mr. Potato Head of rifles on the market. You can do anything with it, the 1913 Picitany rail system allows all types of optics, lights, lasers, etc....Upper Receivers can be interchanged, this also includes changing calibers, ie. 9mm conversion kit. With that being said, the sky is the limit. Yes, there is a downfall to ammo cost in comparison with surplus ammo. Following is comparisons with other rifles I am familiar with.
AK-47/is a 4MOA rifle, once optics are mounted your chin will be almost on the comb of the buttstock to get eye relief. So you're stuck with iron sights.
SKS Variant/is a 2MOA rifle, optics can be mounted using a scout scope. Again, stuck with iron sights. They are prone to slam fire conditions which can be resolved by and aftermarket firing pin with a spring. (I use high slip grease one all my semi-autos for lubricant, with the exception of my M-4's). I have a Russian, Chinese and Yugo (the Yugo doesn't have a chrome lined barrel, so would be the last choice of any rifle I have due to weather conditions).
M38 Mosin Nagant/2MOA? (unconfirmed) just went out and shot it (what a blast!). Again, limited to a scout scope unless you want to have the receiver drilled. The rifle is short and easy to pack, cheap ammo while it lasts.
M24-47/2MOA? (unconfirmed) shot it the same time I shot the M38 (a cannon!). Same as above. Limited to a scout scope that is installed with removal of the rear sight leaf unless you have the receiver drilled. Yep, cheap ammo while it lasts.
M91-30/2MOA? Haven't shot it, along with several others I haven't gotten around to.
Remington 700 SS-5R/Sub MOA 308. This is a fantastic rifle, accompanied by a Leupold Mark 4. This rifle wasn't advertised on the Remington site. I called Remington to confirm what I had. The barrel is made with a M24 blank and is limited edition and the Remington representative wouldn't tell me how many had been manufactured. It shoots best with 168-175 grain bullets.
M1A/1MOA. Another great rifle but it also has optic issues, my chin was almost on top of the comb. Yes, there are options......But, I would rather spend my money in another direction.
Shotguns-Yes, I have four. They all have their uses. I shoot trap regularly at the gun club.
.22-Yes, I have 2 and probably need a couple more including a magnum and a .17HMR.
Ammunition/I can't say enough about the cost of surplus ammo. Not to mention, I could bury the spam cans for an extended amount of time. There are two downfalls, corrosive (nothing a bottle of windex w/ammonia won't cure) and if the Chinese or Zombies are knocking at you're door I hope you already have a couple of the spam cans open (wow, what a pain).
AR15/M4 My first choice, I have a Noveski, Yankee hill and a LMT (one is none, two is one....so what's three???) One battle rifle for each member of my house (the same with the SKS that have been modified to prevent slam fire). I can easily carry a 210 round basic load. Change optics with a flick of my wrist from a reflex sight, to an ACOG, to a scope. Carry a laser, flashlight or all of the above if I want it to weight ten pounds, lol. What about sights, I can use an optic and still have backup sights. I can use a single point, 2 point or 3 point sling. Fore grip??? Gangster grip, heat shields or magpul angle fore grip......I can go on and on.
What I do know is that, every firearm has its purpose. From putting a rabbit on the table to defending your house from pillagers when the SHTF. You make the choice with what trips your tigger.
I am a firm believer in the Second Amendment and am a Veteran of Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
BTW, the photo doesn't reflect new additions. Thank you all for all the information on this site. I look forward to reading new posts.
