Mauser k98 action in .308, military sights and heavy but extremely durable. Have used as a backup gun at deer lease and is very accurate. Ammo easily obtainable and of course, its a Mauser. Very well made, well taken care of, and dependable. Got it in trade and is my favorite military weapon, next to my M1, mainly due to its simplicity and low maintenance. My oldest sonmarine scout sniper took a nice fat doe at 400 or so yards with the rifle using the military sights and a solid sitting position.

I'd like my Mausers to be chambered in .308
by: Jack Flintstone

I have two Mausers, both Yugoslavian and both 8 mm. I would prefer they be .308, it would make things easier. 7.92 x 57 Mauser is the only cartridge I do not reload or cast for, mostly because they shoot the cheap but awesome Yugo surplus ammo so well. A K98 is a fine rifle, but that side sling arrangment really bugs me and it usually means I take out a different rifle or my Yugo M24/47, which has the more traditional sling arrangement, instead.

I would have gave you five stars if you would have posted a pic of your rifle. Is it in good shape? Most of the Israeli rifles I've seen have been pretty beat up. I think this is the only Mauser caliber combination that would get me to buy another (ok, I'd get a German K98 if it was clean and cheap - would not pay retail). I really like my M24/47 - after I replaced the front sight and filed it down to shoot point of aim at 100 yards at the 100 yard setting. Prior to that modification, it shot about 15" high at 100 yards - really annoying. The M24/47 has a very smooth action and doesn't have a magazine follower cut off, a feature I appreciate.

How much was it (about...?) I don't have to ask about accuracy, your story said it all - in the hands of a marksman, it's up to the job.

A kill shot at 400 yards with iron sights is impressive; I expect you are quite proud of your boy; a true son of Liberty and American Rifleman. Semper Fi! You both have my gratitude.
