most people know the important of a good knife in a wilderness survival situation but, some time an axe is very useful ex : to build ,shelter ,shack ,raft ,or trap an axe is more effective ,remember the old woodman ,or the trapper ,they always carry an axe anywere they go in the wilderness so don't make a choice and bring this 2 essential tools in your wilderness expedition
I have both. I like the smaller type axe, I can do pretty good work with it but it is small enough to carry on my person or on a small pack. While it primary use is a tool, I have trained with it as a weapon also. I employ it in a similer fashion to a Japanese Kama, and I can, if need be, throw it with great proficiancy. While I prefer not to throw any type of weapon or tool, If it is a last resort, I will use it that way. I use a cheap $3 hatchet. I also have a really nice forged hawk, but the hatchet is far more useful as a tool and believe it or not, it throws better!

I don't said an axe is the utimate survival tool
I said in combiation whit a knife you have tools to brave lot of situation in the wilderness ,
a machete is good tool too but for wilderness survival situation in the north I prefer an axe
(2.lbs to3¼.lbs)because when is cold you need a lot of wood for the fire and you need a very good shelter + it's easy to broke ice for fishing or drinking whit an axe but in south a machete is better to cut fargo or reed ,a person choose the better tools for her area

Yes, an axe can be a very useful tool. Especially for heavy lumber. It can also be useful for splitting large chunks of wood for the campfire. Les Stroud (Survivor Man) also demonstrated how to use an axe and a piece of flint rock to start a fire.
The drawback to the axe is that it is quite large and heavy. Especially for a carry kit. In such case a hatchet or machette would be a better choice.
An axe can also be used for an emergency weapon, a cross spar for shelters or a cross bar for hanging something, even a shelter pole.
If I had to choose between an axe and a knife, I would take the knife.
