"Go Bags"

Time to get the hell out of dodge.

Go Bag The idea behind a " Go Bag " is that you have all your gear together and ready to go with you should you need to evacuate your surroundings (usually your home). This does not mean packing all of your luggage with everything you own, including the kitchen sink. Your Go Bag should contain only the essentials you need, for the time period you will need them. Remember, this is an evacuation survival bag, not a vacation trip. If you have other family members, it can sometimes be a good idea to have more than one bag or backpack to spread the load.

Prepare your Go Bag:

1. Get your primary emergency survival kit gear and supplies together first. Then, from that decide what will go with you if you leave. This will be what you will put in your go bag. Once you have all of this together in front of you, you can get a good idea of what size Go Bag you're going to need. Here is a list of everything that should be in your go bag: Print this page and use it as a checklist.

2. There are plenty of choices when it comes to go bags.  You can use an existing bag or go and buy something new.  It can be a duffle bag, an internal or external frame backback, a rucksack, or even a large tupperware or similar type storage box.  It is not neccessary to go and spend a lot of money on your go bag, but it should be durable, lightweight, and preferably waterproof or water resistant.

Our preference is a medium to large size backpack, like an "Alice Pack", or "MOLLE" style assault pack with at least 3 external pockets.  More pockets allow for better organization and efficiency.  They allow you to more easily inventory the contents and replace used supplies.  A go bag with plenty of pockets also means you dont have to rummage through everything in your bag to find something.

You can find Alice Packs and similar military surplus type packs at camping stores, military surplus stores, gun shows, and of course online.  It is not entirely neccessary to get a pack with a frame, however if are going to be on foot, we would recommend it.  You should be able to find a decent pack anywhere between $30 and $50, any more than that and you are wasting money that you could be spending on the contents !
