FN FAL rifle

by anonymous

Military Surplus .308 FN FAL rifle.

Military Surplus .308 FN FAL rifle.

The FN FAL rifle has been called the right arm of the free world. It was adopted for military use by nearly 90 countries, and is chambered in the accurate, hard-hitting, and widely available 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Winchester).

It is an extremely robust and reliable design. Most FN FAL rifles have chrome-lined barrels and a useful life of 75,000 rounds. Because so many of this type of rifle have been produced, magazines and parts are cheap and plentiful. In addition, until very recently, cheap surplus ammunition was also available.

The .308 Winchester cartridge can, and has been, successfully used to take all species of North American big game, and countless 2-legged predators. The US military has been re-issuing its version of the 7.62 NATO battle rifle, the M-14, to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan for use as a Designated Marksman Rifle.

Either the M-14 (or it's civilian counterpart, the M1A) or the FN FAL rifle are, in my opinion, the best all-around survival rifles, BAR NONE.

DSA SA58 Para
by: R

This was my first choice and I have recently taken delivery of my custom DSA Para. The Fal is a solid well proven design and DSA make the best examples. The only issues I have are it is a little on the heavy side and I wish I could find an extended mag release. That aside I have no complaints. For a full size/power rifle I can't falt the .308 round and married up to the Fal...a perfect combination.

trigger problems
by: Anonymous

I have an old Brazilian L1A1 that I got several years ago. Its a good all around rifle. One prob though, when I fire it I have to push the trigger forward now. Correct me if I am wrong, but could this be a bent spring in the trigger assembly? Btw, Don't use old U.S. surplus match for bolt action. It spikes higher than what the rifle was made for. At least that was what I was told by an old vet.

How good is it...........Proven No1
by: Anthony Twidale

It's common knowledge that the FN-FAL actually BEAT every rifle the military tested (including the M-14) when conducting field trials for the new battle rifle to replace the M-1 Garand.
The reason it was'nt chosen in the end had everything to do with the rifle being made in Europe and not in the 'States. With the USA's penchant for the "made in the USA" logo, the poor old FN was never gonna get a look inin the end. Hence the M-14, also a great battle rifle in it's own rite.

FN FAL 7.62x51
by: Harry

My first choice in a survival rifle would be the FN FAL. The 7.62x51 cartridge is nearly the ballistic equal to the 30-06. This makes it capable of taking any animal on the North American continent.

The FAL is also one of the most wideley used 7.62x51 battle rifles. Due to this wide availability parts and mags are very available and reasonably priced.

My FAL rifle is a consistent 3moa shooter. This is plenty for both hunting and fighting. Also, due to the 7.62x51 being a current military caliber, it will most likely remain available, long after civilian only calibers.

FN FAL rifle - best all round
by: Catonine

I have 2 of these, STG58 and a DSA medium contour with a folding stock. Both very reliable, and accurate - STG more so but DSA is much lighter and 2" moa so more than adequate. I reload so ammo is still cheap, mags, accessories and parts readily available - you can't go wrong with one of these..... unless you buy a cheap miss matched or inch/metric combo...a lot of horror stories and boat anchors out there...just know what you're buying or get someone who does.....these are awesome rifles.

FN-FAL rifle(G1)
by: Anonymous

I have a G1 variant of the FN-FAL rifle. It is the German model. Of all the "Battle Rifles" I own, this is one of the more accurate. I have had a hard time keep a scope zeroed because the recoil is pretty thumping with a 7.62 x 51 (.308), but with open sights, the FAL is a tack driver. The 7.62x51 round also delivers a hell of a lot of inertia to whatever it hits, I like it a lot.
It is a pretty heavy rifle though, especially with a full 20 round magazine, long too. I prefer a lighter rifle when I'm going walkabout, but I wouldn't take anything for my FN-FAL, especially these days... the prices of guns have gone crazy, I've seen SKS's priced at $450 recently. A couple of years you could pay $129 all day long for an SKS. I saw a British L1A1 at a gun show last week for $1400... Thats nearly double the money I have in my gun. I had a Cetme that I let my buddy talk me out of a few months ago, it fired the same round as the FAL, but was nowhere near as accuate. I used the money to buy ammo...dont get me started on the prices of ammo !
