Emergency Fire stuff

by Joe
(Oregon)

Those little bags of "fire starters" are great but they cost too much. Same with the dryer lint and vasolene.
I buy a match lite fire log (about the size of a presto log) and break off 1" chunks. Much cheaper.
Once was fishing in the rain forest of Oregon.
Wanted a fire but no dry tinder/twigs ect.
Everything was dripping wet.
We used a road flare and got some 4" logs going no problem. Just a thought.

Meow
by: Mike K. Calgary

Those fire logs are the cats meow. One time we were camping and the rain was becoming quite inconvienent. We decided to see how difficult it would be to start a fire in the pouring rain. Out came a fire log, we cut it in half, laid the two pieces side by side and built a "tepee" of small twigs and branches. Covering that with larger pieces of wood up to 4 or 5 inches in diameter. In about 30 minutes we had a fire going that even the rain couldn't extinguish. I well imagine that any dry tinder would work as the tepee sheds the rainwater and the tinder-fire is not affected by the rain. I like the road flare idea as well. I'm sure there are more than a couple of uses for those. Besides the usual, (lighting fires, signaling) how about for heating? You could heat up a small pile of rocks to put in the dirt, under your sleeping bag. If they don't smell to bad, put the rocks in a pail and bring it into the tent. How about attaching a flare to each end of say, a six foot staff? It could be used for self defence against zombies and proberly most animals. When one end burns out flip it around to a fresh flare. If a quick release was used you could proberly replace the used flare with a fresh one, without too much difficulty. I'm sure some of you out there have even better ideas.
