disabled survivor

by Mike Comeaux
(San Marcos Tx)

I am a disabled 55 yr old man with a wife that will soon be in the same shape. In a social breakdown there is only three things you can do fight, F***, or get over the fence. running is not an option and i am too poor to purchase trade goods. the only option left is fighting, and that from my own home or one like it. i have handguns that i am quite proficient with and am trying to choose a rifle, I love the AK47 and its variants (except thumbhole) reliable and powerful but inaccurate over one hundred yards. While it is relatively cheap and ammo is also i do not believe it to be the best all round gun others think it is. I am presently looking at lever action .357 or .454casull with a lean toward the the .454 for knockdown power sake. Both can take down any size game in the central Texas area and with the correct round it will blow a man to perdition. I would be interested in feedback and suggestions.

Uniformity and training
by: FlimFlam46ZULU

An AK47 is good weapon to have for protection. I prefer the M16 because I've used it for nearly 30 years and it hasn't failed me yet.
For your situation, you should be keep it simple. Hving several different weapons may seem like a good idea, but that means different ammunition which could get confusing...9mm,.357,45cal, 308, 223, 7.62 and the lsit goes on. whatever you get, try to make it uniform and easy to use...especially for your wife.
Get familiar with the weapons to the point you could operate them in the dark. Whatever weapons you decide to get, make sure you can get to it.
Good luck and God Bless to you and your wife.

options...
by: Jack

From what I have read, the AK may be your best option. First, it is easy to teach (your wife) and if you are not mobile, a folding stock version like the Yugo M70 may be just the ticket. It sounded like defence of the castle was your main concern and there is nothing better for you. A shotgun (pistol grip?) has a lot of recoil your wife may not be able to handle. A 454 Casull is a very expensive round and has a lot of recoil your wife may not be able to handle. I like a .357 lever rifle...economical in ammo and gun, but if the SHTF, I would MUCH prefer the AK. SKS is ok, but I would prefer 30 round magazines to fixed 10 round boxes (I am not a fan of swapping in a hi cap mag on SKS's...if you want a high cap...get an AK. AK's are relatively cheap, the come in folding stocks, the 7.62x39 will kill just about anything dead out to 300 yds and it is ultra reliable. An AK with a good 4" .357 magnum (or a high cap Glock/XD/M&P) side arm is one hell of a home defense arsenal at about as low a price as you can get. Also, the wife can shoot both and ammo is cheap enough to have a decent stockpile / shoot pile. You had it right the first time!

Only a suggestion
by: Larry Crider

Without knowing the nature of your and your wife's disabilities, it is difficult to say which long gun is the best. However, since you say you are "poor," a .454 Casull is a relatively expensive round to practice with or have a stock of. Economically, it would seem to make sense to have a rifle caliber that matches one of your handguns. It is doubtful that in a SHTF scenario, that you are going to be able to get any ammo from the local gun store or Walmart. What you have will be what you have. You also need to consider at what range you will decide that a person(s) represents a threat for which you will execute lethal action. Unless you have a large perimeter, and intend to take lethal action against all trespassers, your likely engagement range will be under 25 yards. Good luck in your search for the right weapon.

My view
by: Anonymous

Although I dont personally own an AK I can day after shooting several I can (with open sights) confidantly hit a man sized target at 300 yards. If your set on a lever action personally I'd go with a .357 because ammo will be MUCH less of an issue as you can feed 2 very common pistol calibers through it.
