Bushmaster by United Cutlery

United Cutlery bushmaster survival knife

United Cutlery bushmaster survival knife

Huge, heavy and sharp blade with removable handguard, nylon sheath with composite inside for easy use. Saw-back blade, metal compass in handle along with matches, surgical blade, sewing needles, band-aids, magnifier and hook line and sinkers. In the 2 compartments on the sheath are a sharpening stone, snake bite kit, can opener, metal animal snare and (the weakest link in the package-but could easily be replaced) flashlight.

Many survivalists recommend a machete over a knife for survival if possible, to me this one could be used as either and although I haven't tried it I think this blade could take a lot of punishment.

The Cold Steel Bushman is the only hollow handle knife I would own. I used to sell United Cutlery and I am familiar with those POS knives.

Traded the westmark
by: Anonymous

I have actually sold the Westmark and with what I got for it I was able to buy 2 newer knives. A Gerber LMF II and a Becker BK2.

The Westmark was nice, but to me more of a collectors item at this point than something I wanted to put to hard use.

Hopefully once the weather warms I will have a chance to use the Bushmaster and see how it does as well as the other two. Of the two new ones most likely will abuse the Gerber more than the Becker.

hollow handle knives
by: Carl Rooker

Hollow handle knives have their place in wilderness survival. The hollow handle often has room for a rudimentary (level 1) survival kit. You can also force a branch onto the hollow handle to use as a spear. Do it right though, or you could loose the knife. Always double secure such.

You should not try chopping down trees by swinging these knives. They are not strong enough to do this without breaking. Better to place the blade against the branch you want to cut, and hit the back of the blade with another branch. You should not try throwing such a knife either. (Don't throw a knife anyway, why chance losing it.)

As for this knife, I have seen worse, and I have seen better.

I also have

A Westmark Model 703 (a collector's item now). This is probably a tougher knife overall, but when I think of a "survival knife" I am thinking of more than just a knife alone... sturdy as it might be.

The Bushmaster is no kid's knife although there are lots of those too.

For a pocket knife I doubt anything beats Victorinox, although there might be pocket knives bigger, sharper and even tougher I wouldn't compare them with the Swiss Army knives... which are survival pocket knives.

Full tang people, full tang!!
by: giuliano toniolo

ComeŽon guys! A survival knife has got to be full tang!! Those hollow handles will break very easily when botonning the knife. I used to have a knife just like that and it sucked big time!! Maybe you should get a smaller full tang blade, and add a survival kit to its sheath! It will be better than that hollow blade! Good luck with it, if you really intend to use it outdoors, cause you will need it!
