Browning BAR .308 (stock photo)
This is my survival rifle simply because it is the rifle I own and use the most. It is from the 1970s and I bought it used for about $700 (I don't know if that is a good deal or not). It has peep sights and a 4 round mag which is the one thing I don't like. The Mag mounts to a hinged cover and then folds in so reloading is slow and clumsy. Better would be a mag with the cover mounted on bottom or other arrangement. I have never found any higher cap mags or aftermarket anything for this rifle.
I use it for black-tail, mule deer and elk in mostly the dark timber forests of the Oregon Cascades so the peep sight is ideal. 60 to 100 yard shots are all there is. The rifle is absolutely accurate for the distances I shoot and the .308 is a well known round for lower 48 big game. It does beat you up a bit even with a good butt pad but nothin's free. The rifle has never jammed, malfunctioned or failed me, is pretty light as long as I don't mount a scope.
These rifles seem pretty rarely discussed. Is there something I am missing that makes them undesirable? I use factory 150 grain remington core-lokts fwiw.
