Bolt action .22 magnum w/ fixed sights and scope

by Just another taxpayer w/ an opinion
(USA)

While the potential for a catastrophic encounter w/ the beasties (bears, lions, etc...) exists- I believe that the best survival weapon is a .22 magnum rifle. My bug out rifle is a Savage Model 93- bolt action w/ scope. While this particular rifle does not have fixed sights I do believe that the best possible choice would be to have them (if you break the scope; drop your rifle and lose your "zero"; close quarter reactive shooting where even a 3 power scope is impractical, etc....).

Advantages of the bolt action .22 are obvious to me- I can carry 500 rounds to the 60 rounds of 12 ga. ammo. you have for your shotgun; cleaning and maintenance are easier than that of the easily fouled semi-auto rifle....and I can carry that 500 round brick at the same weight of your three 30 round mags; in this politically correct and over sensitive age the "squirrel gun" may not seem as disconcerting as the AR15/AK74/CETME/etc..... slung on your shoulder (this, from an owner of each of these fine weapons...); also, there is a question of legality (is your bug out weapon "legal" in all areas that you may have to traverse?).

In a perfect world- I'm at home, not traveling two states away w/ work- I would like to have my AR15, my Remington 870 riot gun, my SIG P226, etc..... but when the feces hits that proverbial oscillator just make sure that you have your bug out bag; your weapon of choice; and that your axe is sharp and your powder is dry.

Semper Anticus!

Love the 22 Magnum
by: Larry Crider

I happen to have a Ruger 96/22 lever action, but love my Ruger matched with a Taurus 22 magnum revolver. Also, have a couple 45's if needed.

The little magnum when put alongside the .22lr is just a little more of a good thing.
A little more range, A little more hitting power.
Before i bought my two M6's (one S/S .22lr and one parkerized hornet) I had a rossi switch barrel .22/410 that i had reamed out to .22 magnum.
I loved that little gun and now my daughter thinks it belongs to her. Oh well.
I would rechamber the S/S M6 but i want to keep the collector value intact.
I still have my ATLAS .22mag/20guage
A bolt action means no jambs when you dont wantem and fixed sights are the sensible backup.
Top choice

MSG Ret. I agree with your assesment of the .22 Mag. rifle. I too use the .22 Mag as a bugout rifle, but mine is a Ruger model 96 (lever action). It has a fold-down rear sight to allow you to mount a scope, and with flip-off mounts, you have the best of both worlds. By using the Ruger 96, I can carry two extra mags in a double speedloader pouch (used normally for revolvers). I also have a Ruger Single-six in the .22 and .22Mag calibers as a sidearm, allowing me to use the same light ammo for both rifle and pistol.
Thanks for Serving Sarge. I too am retired (Army).
