I know this is not a rifle or pistol. But fire arms are not the only weapons that apply to survival situations. There are many different ideas of what may happen to our society in a crisis. The biggest drawback to fire arms is the noise they make.

A cross bow can be heavy and cumbersome, with a very slow rate of fire. It also takes a certain amount of mucsle to cock even with special devices. But it is very hard hitting, accurate, and silent. In a sensitive situation it will not give away your position.

Unless damaged, the bolts can also be used many times. You do not need to carry a lot of ammo. I prefer the carbon fiber bolts.

Good point about versatility.

However, in the situation I cited a shotgun would give away your position. If stealth is required, for hunting or combat, then a noise maker could become a suicide machine.

I am not saying a cross bow is the best weapon for survival. I am saying that where silence is required it is a good choice.

One way (in a combat survival situation) where a cross bow could save your life is that you would be much more inclined to keep hidden and quiet if you had this instead of an assault weapon or shot gun. The best gun fight is the one you do not get into in the first place. If you had to shoot in this situation, then silence would be your best companion.

you can make a hunt with a cross bow, but you don't have the versatility of a shotgun, and the packing of the cross bow and arrow is difficult
