And I ain't talkin' "bling"...........

by Michael K.

Just a thought. I really am not much of a fighter, so in the likely chance(or unlikely) the power grid collapses for a week or more and civilized laws are tossed out like yesterdays meat loaf, I am trying to learn how to use several different weapons.(sling-shot,six foot stock whip, various throwing knives, mossberg 590 Mariner, Kimber Custom .45ACP, bear spray, and a picture of my ex.)But you know,it's only in the movies where you get to choose your weapon of choice before encountering the bad guy. In the real world, with all the planning in the world, you may still find yourself without any kind of weapon to defend yourself. Any how the point I am trying to make here, is that hand to hand combat may be your only option. Now this mainly directed to all the guys. And their jewelery. I'm thinking that a jock and strap would be worth wearing once and a while. After all, if you end up encountering some unecessary roughness, at least the boys are some what protected.

Disable all the way!
by: Original Tinman

One of the best weapons that always seems to be available is the ground. Bouncing someones head off of it seems to take the steam outta folk pretty quick. Also belts and pens and tiny/light little things may be great if your Steven Segul or Jason Borne but in my experience you've gotta really damage a guy to put him down and out. I certainly would'nt expect any violent attacker to be some two bit puss either not to mention they probably will come in two's or three's etc. Another thing pepper spray sucks but it won't stop a guy from attacking in fact I believe it will take his rage up a notch from what i've seen a few minutes later the fight may be out of him but these things usually only last a few seconds.
My $.02

You have the right idea about knowing a variety of weapons, however you need to take it much farther.

In a survival situation (particularly an attack) learn that anything and everything can be used as a weapon.

Your priorites are distract, display, disable, distroy. It may be macho to stand and fight, but getting away will usually be the best survival method. Any distraction could give you that chance.

How you carry yourself will go a long way. If you act afraid, bullies will not fear you. If you challenge, someone who might not fight you in the first place will now fight you. I have discouraged several would be attackers by not backing down, and have kept other situations cool by not overreacting.

If you have to fight, you will find it easeir to disable an attacker than it is to kill him. Carries a lot less guilt too. Here it is really important to understand what can be used as a weapon. Car keys make an excellent push dagger. Don't have a whip, how about a belt? Shoes can be used as a club, as well as any stick, bar, bottle, or a very wide selection of items. Think ahead about this, and use the imagination. The idea here is to drive off the attacker. With most bullies and criminals, this will work. They are cowards, and will not pursue the issue if they know they could be hurt or killed.

Unfortunately, for the druggies and terrorists among us, you might have to fight to the death. Again, realise that a gun or a knife is only one way to accomplish this. Pens and pencils, keys, sticks, rocks, wire, rope and string, shoes, fists, feet, teeth, heads, anything can be used if you know how. Learn.

One last thing. Some add "disarm" to this list. Don't bother. Unless you are extremely well trained, you will only endanger yourself trying to simply disarm an attacker. If you can't get away, or discourage him, go directly to disable.
