Air Force Survival Knife

by Chris
(MS)

Ontario 499 Air Force Survival Knife

Ontario 499 Air Force Survival Knife

The Standard survival knife, included in Aircrew survival kits, in the USAF. The Ontario Knife 499 Survival Knife, aka "Bolt knife" flat "bolt" handle doubles as a hammer, or strike plate, pledge edge with a saw back. Comes with leather sheath, and sharpening stone. Hand guard has two holes for tying to a spear. Great workhorse in the woods.

One major flaw.
by: Anonymous

The Air force Survival knife is built like a tank, other than the handle rotting off it is hard to imagine this item failing however:

since chopping and hacking would be the number one chore of such a knife .... this knife gets knocked down in score due to it's gross flaw of being out of balance.

That big nut on the handle which one assumes is to break out a canopy of a downed aircraft is too heavy to allow good knife balance when chopping, if you doubt this go cut and trim some bamboo as I did today with it.

I traded the sharpening stone for a rod of flint in that little pouch after reasoning which item would be harder to find in the wild.

Still the best all round survival knife
by: Grunt Doc

As I've said previously in this forum; the Air Force Survival Knife wins on all counts. Perhaps it's not as pretty as more expensive knives, but it is as rugged and dependable as they come. Its size, weight and design make it perfect for most chores you're likely to encounter. It holds an edge quite well and will do what is asked of it. I've had mine (Cammilus brand) for over 30 years and wouldn't trade it for anything. Supplement it with a quality multi tool like the compact Gerber or Leatherman and you're all set. I'll probably pass it on to a lucky relative in my will.

Good choice
by: Carl Rooker

I have had several of these knives, and a couple of cheap imitations.

It is a very good basic knife that will do a lot of work. Keeps a good edge too.
