Sog Vulcan
Just as is true with thier fixed blade knives, SOG's folding knives
like the Sog Vulcan are a formidable bunch. The Vulcan is an
awesome looking knife, the shape feels good in the hand and blade is a
thing of beauty. If any of the folders on our list qualify as
art, this would be the one. At just over 8" open and 4-1/2"
closed, the size is perfect, and the weight is a surprisingly light
5oz.
Sog utilizes their trademark
"Arc-Lock" locking mechanism, which they claim will withstand 1000 lbs
of force at the lock, and is fully ambidextrous. The blade is
swiftly opened with the kick deployment on the back of the knife.
When you clip the Vulcan in your pocket, the entire knife is
concealed except for the clip, there is no part of the knife sticking
above the pocket line as some clips are designed to do. (The clip
is also reversible.)

The handles are
black Zytel, and when the knife is open the finger and thumb guards
are quite pronounced and effective. The textured Zytel
also has sculpted grooves over the thumb studs for ease of opening,
and a lanyard hole at the back. The blade of the Sog
Vulcan is VG-10 steel, which is super strong and has good corrosion
resistance. All Sog knives are guaranteed against
defects in workmanship and materials for the life of the original
purchaser, so keep your receipt if you buy one. Again, abuse
and misuse will void the warranty. Sog offers an
engraving service and will laser engrave your knife for $12.00... a
nice touch especially if you are buying the knife as a gift for the
discerning knife owner in your bunch. MSRP on the Vulcan
is $150, but you can pick one up for around $90 if you shop
around.
