.300 savage

by james baskey
(north lima, ohio)

i have a .300 savage model 99. it is a lever action rifle with a pistol-type revolver chamber for holding the shells that are contained inside. it is in excellent condition, and it was a gift to me from my father, who is still alive.
he was given it by his former boss, back in 1947. i even still have the canvas carrying case it came with.

sincerely,
jim baskey

Savage 300 Choices
by: Bruce V

My Dad gave me my Savage 300 in 1974 as a Christmas gift. My first high powered rifle. The first deer I took was with it, and was a 200 yard shot. Two of them running across a field from an island of scrub trees to the main forest, the first I got, but the second started that high prancing jumping stride they take when under pressure, so it got away. But, for my first deer at 200 yards, what a thrill. I was amazed at how long it took me to get to it (half funning, half walking, the time seemed to go on and on). Now, I have a choice between also my Winchester Model 94 .30-.30 and my Remington 742 .308 semi (and I use them all from time to time) but the Savage 300 feels so naturally balanced to carry, and it has such "point and shoot" accuracy that it is often still my choice. I remember one time with the Model 94 aiming at a deer from over 200 yards and deciding not to take the shot, and wishing I had the Savage 300 instead. I wouldn't part with it for anything.

Model 99
by: Wayne B.

Jim, I too have a model 99 Savage. I bought it in 1972. It's been a faithful gun for me, taking black bear, mule deer and whitetails. I've also had some 110gr. hollow points loaded for it and have taken groundhogs at 150 yds. It's a light, comfortable shooting rifle. Treat it right and it will last for you to pass it on to your grandkids.
