1911 .45

For survival, I suggest that .22LR papoose because it's light, it breaks down for easy carry, it runs dirty, and you can carry plenty of ammunition. Contrary to popular myth, .22LR can take down a deer inside 75yd. For the defense side of things (including large animals, 2 and 4 legged), pack a 1911 .45ACP or Glock 10mm with the right lube for whatever environment you're going to be in. The combined weight/space claim of the .22LR and sidearm is less than that of most larger-caliber rifles, and serves your purposes quite well in my opinion.

Problem with the papoose
by: Larry Crider

I bought a Marlin Papoose. Tried it and liked. But, there is a serious problem with that papoose. My brother also shot it and liked and decided I should give it to him. That is the problem. It is just so likeable. Now, I have to go buy another one. Also, for those who want a small scope that will fit in the floating case, a Crickett rifle scope (4X) fits perfectly and has a mil dot reticle. Cheap but a reliable scope.

Taking of deer
by: Garrett

My great uncle has lived in the scrub ranch land of central texas along with the majority of my family for many generations back, and he has told me about more than one occasion throughout his life where he would use a .22LR to drop deer to stock the freezer with. I guess when times were hard it was pretty easy to put meat on the table by going on the back porch an popping a doe in the head from 75 yards when they were getting into the garden. No need to worry the game warden with any of that, just clean it in the garage away from prying eyes

versatility in survival situation
by: mep canada

the marlin papoose is a great one, easy to pack, easy to use for small person and cheap price of the 22lr ammo. I recommend this rifle for small
or week-end expedition and added with a good handgun (45 acp or 9mm)they make interesting
combination, but for larger expedition or wilderness survival rifle I recommend a 2 in 1 combo rifle like the savage model 24 in caliber
223/20 or 30.30/12 or the baikal taiga 308/12, you have all you need for; bird, small animal and big game hunting plus they offered good fire power for personnel protection and added with a good handgun you can confront a lot of situation
for handgun I recommend a ruger or s/w revolver in caliber .357 so you can shut 2 caliber(.357 or .38)and have more versatility .

SIMPLICITY, EFFICIENCY, VERSATILITY,that's make the difference in a wilderness survival situation
